Vision Screeners A Must For AnyLions Club

by Lion Todd Mallasch

As a long standing Lion, I have always known that vision is one of our main concerns. After all, Hellen Keller asked us to be her ‘Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness’, so I have always felt very proud to help with vision screening. I’m sure most Lions Clubs now have or have access to a SPOT or Plusoptix Vision screener, but if you are one of the few clubs that don’t use it on a regular basis, let me try to explain what you are missing out on. Recently, our Waupaca Lions Club screened the eyes of over 600 students. Performing this task using a regular eye chart would have taken weeks, but having the Spot reduced it down to merely a few days. Not only does it make the process of eye screening faster and more efficient, it takes out the guesswork and gives results with pin-point accuracy. When we send home a recommendation for a student to have a follow-up eye exam with a professional, we feel very confident with our results. I can’t tell you the amount of times we have had a parent inform us how thankful they are for letting them know their child had a vision problem. Most children don’t have a clue how much they are missing out on when they have poor vision. It is amazing to see the smile on a child’s face the first time they can see the world clearly again. So once again, if you are not presently using a screener, I urge you to do all you can to obtain one. It is a decision you will not regret!
